Newborn Session Information

Congratulations on the arrival of your new baby and thank you for choosing Cathy’s Clicks, Cathy Gerth Photography to capture this SPECIAL time in your lives.

What is the best age to photograph my baby?

*The best age to photograph your newborn baby is when they are under two weeks of age. During this time, your newborn will likely sleep most during the day, which will allow us to move her/him around without waking easily. When babies are that tiny they spend a lot of time sleeping and still curl up into very sweet poses similar to the positions they were in when they were in the womb. (Newborn Portrait Sessions are scheduled for weekday a.m. appointments). Please complete the contact page (click here) to start the booking of your Newborn Portrait Session.

When to book your newborn session?

*Please contact me during the middle of your second trimester to schedule your baby's session. I will then pencil you in and reserve your "tentative" photo-shoot according to your due date. I only schedule a certain number of sessions per week, this way if your baby comes early or slightly overdue I will have a day for your session. Please call me within 48 hours of your delivery so we can confirm a specific date and time for your session. To reserve your session half of the session fee is required, with the remaining balance due on or before your session. Dates will not be held without payment and all sales are non-refundable (see terms and policies).

*If your baby is already born, don't panic. I always try my best to squeeze newborns into my schedule. Plus older babies take beautiful portraits, too!

*Please note: For baby boys - it is best to schedule the photo session at least 5 days after a circumcision procedure.

Can sibling(s) be added to some of the photographs?

*Yes, sibling(s) can be added to some of the images; these photographs will be captured at the END of the Newborn Portrait Session. Siblings must arrive towards the END of the session and be accompanied by another adult. Please keep in mind that Newborn Sessions may take up to 4 hours depending on the disposition of the baby and this is too long to ask the young children to stay for the entire Newborn Session. (Thank you in advance).

*Where your session is held?

*Your session will take place in my Lahaina home-based studio.

How long will your session take?

*Please set aside 2-4 hours for your baby’s first photo shoot. This takes into consideration to allow enough time for feeding and comforting.

How can I prepare?

*Please feed your little one prior to the shoot and dressing your precious baby in an outfit that can be easily removed.

*Wear comfortable lightweight clothing as the temperature of the studio is kept toasting warm for the comfort of your baby.

*Pack a spare change of clothes just in case there are any little accidents.

*Bring a pacifier – Only if you are using one, as they can be very helpful during the session.

*Bring a snack in case you get hungry throughout the session.

*If you’re formula feeding bring with you extra bottles just in case.

How do you pose my baby and what safety precautions do you use?

*When it comes to photographing your sweet precious newborn, I will only photograph your baby in the safest ways possible. Not all newborns can pose in all positions.

*The utmost care will be given to place your baby in natural positions that mimic the way your little one may have laid in the womb.

*Every baby is different; some babies love to be on their back, while some prefer to be on their tummy. There are some that like to be swaddled and there are some that like to stretch their limbs. Some babies sleep through the entire session and some babies are wide-awake. If baby doesn’t like to be in a certain pose, or feeling fussy or uncomfortable with a position they will let me know and I will move on. I follow baby’s lead.

*Parent participation will be requested for shots that require head and neck support as well as using mom or dad as a spotter.

*At NO time will your precious baby be left unattended on any prop that could place them in danger.

What type of props do you have and will I need to bring my own?

*I have blankets, baskets, crates, wooden bed(s), knitted hats, colorful wraps, and headbands and other fun items to use during your baby’s first photo-shoot.

*For some specialty themed photo sessions a 4 to 6 week notice may be required.

*If you have a sentimental item that you would like to use, please bring it – we will fit it in.

How many digital images do you take and how many images will be in our gallery?

*I strive to provide you with a variety of images to choose from. I only select those images that have made "The Cut" based on my style, creativity and with an emphasis on in-focus representation. Images that do not make "The Cut" will not be shown and will be deleted. On average, Newborn Portrait galleries include 20 plus images.

When will my digital images be available for viewing?

*Your digital images will be available approximately 2 weeks after your session date; I will email you a password for your private online viewing gallery.

Do you offer prints and or products?

*Yes, I offer prints and products at an additional cost. I know life gets busy with a newborn and the last thing I want is for your digital images to sit on your computer hard drive without the ability to see your precious little one in print. By offering this option to my clients I can save you time and energy. Most prints and products are shipped directly to your address in a fast and timely manner.
